Leading economic expert Jim Rogers traveled to 150 countries over 150,000 miles in three years - follow his adventures here on FentonReport. In this video Jim and Paige visit Nouakchott in Mauritania. Copyright Jim Rogers - provided as a special contribution to The Fenton Report. http://www.fentonreport.com Nouakchott is the capital and by far the largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahara. The city is the administrative and economic centre of Mauritania. Located on the Atlantic coast of the Sahara, it lies on the west coast, on the Atlantic Ocean, although with the exception of Nouakchott Wharf and a deep water port, the coastal strip is mostly left empty and allowed to flood. Due to the rapid build-up, the city is quite spread out, with f...

Nouakchott (/nwɑːkˈʃɒt/, Arabic: نواكشوط Nuwākshūṭ, originally derived from Berber Nawākšūṭ, "place of the winds") is the capital and by far the largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahara. The city is the administrative and economic centre of Mauritania. Nouakchott was a small village of little importance until 1958, when it was chosen as the capital of the nascent nation of Mauritania. It was designed and built to accommodate 15,000 people, but droughts since the 1970s have displaced a vast number of Mauritanians, who resettled in Nouakchott. This caused rapid urban growth and overcrowding, with the city having an estimated population of 2 million in 2008 despite the official figures being under a million. The resettled population inhabited slum areas unde...

The adventures. The experience was a lot though didn't have much power to film everything. A small clip on arrival. Mauritania is a beautiful country. Lots of social economic issues, but the crew and I were able to see somethings and meet a few people while there. I hope to get back and venture more inland to a few other places. It was quite rough traveling, the car broke down in the desert and we were all stranded for hours. The night fell, the stars came out, there was a lot of drama getting to Nouakchott but looking back it was an adventure for sure.
A third of the population of Mauritania lives, directly or indirectly, from artisanal fisheries. Bamba Fall, a unionist fisherman, invites us into the hectic activity of the port of Nouakchott: the tragic stories in the sea of old fishermen, the hard work of fishing gear from blacksmithing, imaginatively recycled materials, the sale of fish by bold women, the education of children by the hand of Imam of the mosque... A world in which the dangerous art of fishing exists thanks to the solidarity of those who share it. CCTV’s epic journey through the Sahara begins in Mauritania. But before making our way to the desert, we explore the capital city’s famous fish market. Right on the shores of the North Atlantic, Nouakchott’s ‘Port de Peche' is a vibrant scene of colourful sights, sounds and smells, as Lindy Mtongana discovers.
